318 crank in a 340? Will it work?
The short answer is yes, if you re-balance for the 340 rod/piston assembly. The old poly 318 (61-66 US/67 CDN) crank is forged steel as is the 64-67 273.

360 Crank in 340 block
Anybody ever have the mains ground on a 360 crank to std 340-318 mains. Will it be strong enough for st stock motor less than 400hp 2bbl? Have 4 340 blocks and would like to use them. I know mopar perf sells a 3.58 cast crank with 318 mains but I can get my 360 crank ground a lot chepper. Any thoughts.

The 340 crank has been said to be a better forged crank, but I have not seen a significant difference between a forged 318 crank, and a forged 340 crank. Your engine came with a cast crank. Both forged and cast cranks are internally balanced, but the dampers are different.

The last forged crank 318 was made in 1972. 1973 was the first year for cast crank 'teens. The first cast crank that Ma Mopar ever produced was in 1971. The 360 was the lucky winner. The 400 was next in '72, the 340 and 318 in '73, with the 440 following in '74. The slant didn't catch up until '80 or '81 when they also got hydraulic lifters.

A cast 318 crank will work fine. You need to use the '68 or '69 318 rods with the full floating piston pins. THey are considerably lighter than 340 or 360 rods and with arp bolts will turn 6800 all day without any problems.

The 318 and 340 cranks are dimentionally the same. When properly balanced to everything, they should be interchangable. Both used cast and forged cranks. I had a 318 forged crand out of a 68 Fargo 1/2 ton. Comparing it to my 340 forged crank-the 340 crank was "lightened" due to the fact the 340's used a heavier rod.

Hey Sport340 the cranks are the same,rods the same.U know u could always use the 360 crank with the 318 engine but u need to get the main journal turned down to 318 size and also the rear seal.Now if u use the 360 crank with 30thou over pistons u get a 350cubic inch 318.Not to bad at all.Ofcourse u would have to use 360 heads aswell.
