Wondering what type of recycled lead is best for casting round balls. My brother picked up 47 lbs of lead from scuba diving weight belt for $2. Curious if it would be good. Also wondering about car/truck battery lead. Got a 120 lbs battery at work I could grab. Hope to cast my own someday.

Lead hardness? | The Muzzleloading Forum
Wheel weights will work for cast balls but because the lead is much harder and won't deform easily to permit loading, thicker patches are necessary to make up for the lack of ductility. Finding a good patch/ball combination can be a lengthy process, especially in a smoothbore where there is no room in the non-existent rifling grooves for the ...

Wheel Weight balls
Hard lead was the normal load for ML used on heavy game in the 19th century and possibly before. I have a 16 bore rifle that shoots WW as well as it shoots pure lead but I can shoot a thicker patch with pure lead. WW is harder and also casts a slightly larger ball from the same mould since lead shrinks more than WW as it cools.

hard balls
If you can find lead wheel weights they should be harder than pure lead. Depends on what you are going to shoot them out of. A patched round ball in a rifled barrel needs to be soft enough to engage the patch/rifling. In a smooth bore they can be harder as long as the size is correct. Again it depends on what you are hunting.

Why "Soft" Lead"
Help Support Muzzleloading Forum: ... You mentioned the imprint of the patches weave that shows up on the soft lead ball. This is the resin for using pure lead when shooting PRB. Is pure lead really necessary for muzzle loading balls or bullet in
Old wheel weights were good but drop about 10-12 BHN which is a bit hard for patched ball use but works fine in conicals from what I have experienced. I have not tried this alloy with mini-balls so cannot say how it works for them. Modern wheel weights are not usually very good as they are alloyed with zinc and do not cast well.

This tip isn't referring to the caliber of the rifle to the ball size. For example, if you have a .50 caliber rifle, you are probably using .490 or .495 lead balls. The compressed patch thickness fills in the gap between the ball and the bore of the barrel. We are going to assume you

Round Balls per Pound
The total number lead balls of a particular size equal to a pound in weight gives the "gauge." For example, 12 balls per pound equals a 12 gauge. The 20 gauge shotgun means 20 lead balls equal in size to the gun's barrel diameter constitute one pound. Therefore, the 12 gauge is larger in bore size than the 20 gauge.
