Crushing prison will lock up targets and slowly damage their HP. Its used mainly to target the big baddies in parties. When you start getting mages you'll learn that this can be a life saver. If you want to lock targets up though paralyze and mass paralyze will do better jobs at it, but they don't near-kill their targets.

One thing that some of you seem to forget is how CoC works on bosses too unlike the other ones you mention. CoC can keep white units frozen 24/7, yellow units giving them only about a second of freedom before you can cast it again, and orange units about 1/3-1/2 of the time supposing you recast it a bunch when you can.
