Natural rutile concentrates, which typically contain 92%–96% wt. TiO 2, can be used for either the production of TiO 2 pigment or the production of raw titanium metal. In the case of TiO 2 pigment production, rutile concentrate is first chlorinated to TiCl 4, and then TiCl 4 is purified and oxidized again to ultrafine pure TiO 2 (see Chapter 4).
